M.S.U. IN THE SERVICE OF SUFFERING HUMANITY

By Dr. K.K. Agarwal

Introduction:

•  Unique organization operating on wheels to provide much needed surgical facilities in remote areas where the population, not affluent by any means, can ill-afford costly treatment of their surgical problems.

•  MSU has been rendering its service successfully in the interior and remote part of the State.

•  MSU provide services in the State where density of population varies from place to place in extreme proportion.

•  MSU working in such state where half of the population lives under poverty line.

•  MSU rendering its services in the State where the number of patients increasing day by day partly by typical uncertain weather conditions, partly by population hazards and partly by growing awareness among people about their illness and need for their treatment.

•  It is the trust and faith of the people in MSU and selfless services rendered by MSU staff that increases the significant need of the camps.

Aims:

•  To provide medical, surgical and diagnostic facilities to rural masses.

•  Surgery of various surgical problems like gall bladder stones, kidney, ureter and bladder stones, inguino-scrotal swellings, appendicitis, laparotomies, anorectal surgeries, lump breast and other major and minor elective operations in the field of general surgery.

•  Early diagnosis of malignancies and health education.

•  According to camp statistics, large number of gall bladder stone cases occurred in northern region and kidney stones in western part of the State, which are diagnosed and operated in masses by MSU camps.

Advantages:

With the passage of time, wide spread surgical facilities have been created in various parts of the State, MSU still has significance and there is increased demand for organizing camps. Its existence is a must in the context of present medical scenario. The reasons are:

•  Providing surgical facilities at doorsteps of poor masses in less developed areas.

•  Provides operative facilities to villagers in their own environment without causing disruption of their daily routine.

•  Patients are operated without spending a single paisa from their pockets.

•  All the medical, surgical and diagnostic facilities come under one roof.

•  Majority of rural population is illiterate, conservative in approach and superstitious. They neither have the means, nor the inclination to travel distances to take benefit of hospital services but they prefer to be operated in MSU dedicated camps.

•  Without the camps, people fall victims in the hand of quacks and pretenders who not only misguide them but also extract their scarce savings and the treatment given by them often harmful and causing misery rather than cure.

•  No waiting period for undergoing surgery and patients resume their work within few weeks.

•  The organization of camps involves peoples' participation, social and charitable institutions providing funds and volunteers to supplement the Govt.'s resources.

•  The medical team in MSU camps comprises of qualified and experienced staff whose skill is developed fast by dealing with large number of cases at each camp. They are more conversant with the mindset and problems of rural population.

Results and Outcome of Surgical Patients:

In my eight years experience in this unit as JS(Surgery), I have operated many patients and I have also attended several postoperative and follow-up duties organized by MSU, and my observations are as follows:

•  No major complications seen. Minor ailments if, any were treated accordingly.

•  As per statistics, it has been noticed during postoperative period that infection rate is negligible because:

•  Efficient sterilization of the theatre and instruments.

•  Least chances of cross infection and hospital acquired infection.

•  Good immunity status of rural population.

Required Future Plans:

Adding the following can increase the efficiency of MSU camps:

•  Laparoscopic Surgery for Gall bladder stones, appendix and hernia.

•  TUR for prostate to give relief to elderly patients presenting with urinary problems.

•  Unit's own blood bank
